Undeserved Pedestals

Icons were forced to the masses

Spotlights, plaques, trophies, statues

All on full display

A finger from out of nowhere points to these sights

Without any audibles, the crowd mindlessly cheers

You know what they say about 50,000 or more fans, right?

The contrary was ignored

As heroes did insidious things off-camera

Caustic words, disrespect, subterfuge, even genocides

Yet they still get extolled

Pedestals become broken

When the unknowns and the slandered should’ve had them

Real heroes don’t call themselves heroes

The ones forced are always the ones who cause disappointment

  1. “Real heroes don’t call themselves heroes” resonated. I had a friend who would always announce her intelligence. I felt compelled to tell her that intelligent people don’t go around calling themselves intelligent.

I know there’s a larger point here, but that line reminded me of the above.
